WHY EXACT SIZES MATTER
Upload the size the platform renders
Every platform re-compresses what you give it. Uploading at the exact render size means the platform scales your photo as little as possible, which is the difference between a crisp frame and a soft one, especially on text and fine detail. Re-encoding here also strips EXIF, including GPS, which is what you want for social. Picking which vertical frames deserve the feed at all is its own craft; we wrote about it in selecting vertical photos for social and the same day social workflow.
GETTING THE CROP RIGHT
The crop decides more than the size
Every platform wants a different shape, and a photograph composed for one of them is being cut for the rest. Four things worth knowing before you export a set.
Centre crops behead people
A standing portrait cropped to a square from the middle loses the head and the feet. Anchor to the top for anything with a face in the upper third.
Export once, in every shape
Tick portrait, story and link preview together and one photo comes back as three files, correctly named. It is the same work either way; this just does it in one pass.
Upload the size it renders
Sending a 6000 pixel frame to Instagram means their compressor decides how it looks. Handing over the exact render size keeps that decision yours.
Strip the metadata first
A resize here does not carry EXIF across, but originals you send elsewhere still do. The metadata remover handles those, and the EXIF viewer shows what is in them.

What size should Instagram photos be?
Portrait posts render at 1080 x 1350, squares at 1080 x 1080, stories and reels at 1080 x 1920. Sizes checked August 2026.
Does resizing strip metadata?
Yes, canvas re-encoding drops EXIF including GPS. Keep originals for your archive; check what a file carries with the EXIF viewer.
Why JPEG and not PNG?
For photographs JPEG at quality 85 is smaller and visually identical on social. PNG is for graphics with flat color and hard edges.
